The Three Stages of Human Memory

The ability to think in a higher level is one of the things that make human different from other creation. Humans know how to think and to reason. This ability makes human unique from other animals.
Thinking involves the use of the brain in which humans make use of the information stored in the memory to be able to process ideas.
It is in our memory where we stored all information that we got. The information about our self, about our family, the people around us, in the place where we live, in the places we went before and much more. It is in our memory where we store all the knowledge that we have, all the things we learned, as well as all the things about everything.
The human memory has been divided into three stages by the Psychologist. These stages are the sensory memory, the short-term memory and the long-term memory.
The sensory memory could last only for less than a second. An example for this is when an individual sees an object. The information about the particular object passes from his or her eyes going to his or her sensory memory. The sensory memory then holds a nearly exact picture of that particular object.
The image of the object will only last in the sensory memory for only less than a second. The memory on the object can be prolonged if the information from the sensory memory is transferred rapidly to the second stage of memory which is the short-term memory.
The short-term memory will hold the information about the particular object in the mind of the individual for as long as he or she thinks about it.
When he or she stops to think about it, then the information will going to fade away. An example for this is when the telephone numbers are being memorized and dialed; the number is in the memory but it will fade away after about twenty seconds if these are not transferred to the long-term memory.
The long-term memory is considered to be as the largest part of the entire memory system. This part of memory has the capability to store new and old information; either the information is absorbed few minutes ago or stored many years ago.
Improving memory means to store much information to our long-term memory. This can be done by a constant practice in our ability to remember.
